One of the most intriguing parts of this book is that the pages are not all the same size and the caterpillar leaves holes in the various foods he eats. Children can practice the days of the week as the story progresses. This book can also help with counting since the hungry caterpillar eats through one apple on Monday and keeps adding food items until he has a stomachache. I can relate to that caterpillar.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar can also spark conversations about metamorphosis and how animals and people may change over time.
